World‍ Cup, Gold Cup Face ⁢Attendance Challenges

Updated June 16, 2025

The opening of the Club World Cup in Miami⁢ coincided ⁢with other events, ⁣highlighting‍ a challenge for FIFA. Gianni‍ Infantino, the FIFA ⁣president, has faced ‍scrutiny amid ‍the tournament’s kickoff.

Adding to the attendance woes, a Gold Cup double-header⁢ in San Diego ‍between Saudi Arabia,‍ Haiti, Costa rica and Suriname appeared⁢ sparsely attended. The issue isn’t necessarily competition between ⁣tournaments, as the matches were held in different markets, save⁣ for the Los Angeles area, which hosted both a⁢ Club World Cup match ⁢(PSG v Atleti) and a Gold Cup match (Mexico v⁤ Dominican Republic).

FIFA’s initial high prices ⁤for the Club World Cup didn’t help⁤ matters, even with later price drops. Concacaf also ⁢has a⁣ reputation for high ticket costs, often resulting in half-empty stadiums. When the U.S., Mexico, and canada bid⁣ for the World Cup eight years ago, they projected an average ticket price of $305 for the group stage.

Despite the attendance issues and⁤ high⁤ ticket prices, fans have found entertainment value in the games themselves. The USMNT’s victory provided satisfaction for⁣ American fans, and ⁤the Dominican Republic’s performance against Mexico offered excitement. Al Ahly dominated much of the first half against Miami, but Lionel Messi delivered a strong second-half performance, though the game ended in a draw.

These games provided moments ⁢of excitement,‍ proving that soccer can⁢ still deliver, despite‌ the financial aspects of these tournaments.

What’s next

The Club World Cup and Gold Cup continue, with organizers hoping for increased attendance as the tournaments progress.
