The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) secured the top spot in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 2-1 victory over Australia on June 18, 2026, with Turkey’s 1-0 loss to Paraguay on June 20 solidifying their position. The result marked the first time the USMNT has clinched a World Cup group stage top spot since 2018, according to FIFA’s official standings.

The win over Australia was fueled by goals from forward Malik Tillman and midfielder Max Arfsten, who both scored in the second half. The match, played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, drew a crowd of 92,345, the largest attendance for a U.S. men’s team game in 2026. Turkey’s defeat to Paraguay, which occurred in Asunción, eliminated the European side from contention for the group’s second-place finish, leaving the U.S. as the clear group leaders.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who was appointed in January 2026, hinted at a “heavy rotation” for the team’s final group stage match against Turkey on June 24, according to a June 22 statement published by CBS Sports. Pochettino said, “We need to manage energy for the knockout rounds, so we’ll give opportunities to players who haven’t featured as much yet.” The coach did not specify which players would be rested, but reports suggest defenders Mark McKenzie and Tim Ream could be sidelined in favor of younger options like Reggie Cannon and DeAndre Yedlin.

The Group D standings after three matches show the U.S. with six points, followed by Paraguay (four points), Turkey (one point), and Australia (zero). The U.S. will face Paraguay in the round of 16, while Turkey will play Australia in a play-in match for the final spot in the knockout stage.

The victory over Australia was not without controversy. The match referee, Carlos Batres of Honduras, awarded a disputed penalty to the U.S. in the 62nd minute after a challenge by Australia’s Harry Schnitler on Arfsten. Schnitler later criticized the decision, calling it “a mistake that cost us the game,” according to a June 19 interview with SBS Sport. Australia’s manager, Graham Arnold, declined to comment on the incident.

Pochettino’s rotation strategy has drawn mixed reactions from fans and analysts. ESPN soccer analyst Taylor Twellman noted, “Pochettino is taking a calculated risk. The U.S. has the depth to handle this, but a loss to Turkey could complicate their path.” The U.S. has not lost a World Cup group stage match since 2014, but Turkey’s recent form, including a 3-2 win over Germany in a warm-up match, has raised concerns.
