The United states men’s national team (USMNT) experienced a humbling 4-0 defeat against Switzerland in an international friendly Tuesday night. The match, played at Geodis Park, saw Switzerland dominate early, scoring four goals in the first half. This loss marks the USMNT’s fourth consecutive defeat, a streak not seen since 2007, raising concerns about their preparation for the upcoming World Cup.
Switzerland’s Dan Ndoye opened the scoring in the 13th minute, followed by Michel Aebischer in the 23rd, Breel Embolo in the 33rd, and Johan Manzambi in the 36th. The Swiss team secured their third straight victory, extending the USMNT’s winless run against European teams to eight games since 2021. The home crowd voiced their displeasure with loud boos as the U.S. conceded four goals in the first 40 minutes, a first on home soil, according to Opta.
The game occurred just over a year before the start of the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. is co-hosting. The USMNT, now 5-5 under coach Mauricio Pochettino, is preparing for their Concacaf Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. Pochettino took over after Gregg Berhalter’s departure following the team’s early exit from last year’s Copa América.
The Swiss goals resulted from defensive breakdowns. Ndoye capitalized on a through ball, beating Nate Harriel. Manzambi’s dribbling set up Aebischer’s goal. A spilled save by goalkeeper Matt Turner allowed embolo an easy score. A midfield mix-up led to manzambi’s first international goal.
Several key USMNT players were absent, including Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams, Folarin balogun, and Sergiño Dest.
Turner made his first appearance since March 23. Berhalter earned his first start, and Brenden and Paxten Aaronson became the fourth set of brothers to start for the U.S., a feat last achieved by George and Louis Nanchoff in 1979.
Pochettino made nine changes from the previous game, retaining onyl Arfsten and Cardoso. Five substitutions were made at halftime, and Damian Downs debuted in the 75th minute.
What’s next
The USMNT will look to rebound as they prepare for the Concacaf Gold Cup, aiming to improve their performance and address the issues exposed in the friendly against Switzerland. The team needs to find solutions quickly to ensure they are competitive for the upcoming World Cup.
