The Pacific-based aircraft carrier USS George Washington has begun heading toward the Middle East, according to reporting from the Associated Press, amid growing scrutiny over mental health and supply chain challenges aboard the long-deployed USS Abraham Lincoln.

The deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln has featured a record-setting uninterrupted stretch at sea exceeding 260 days, as reported by the Associated Press, while supporting military operations against Iran. This prolonged timeline at sea has amplified concerns regarding crew well-being and mechanical strain on the vessel and its equipment.

Military Supply Disruptions and Crew Conditions

Military operations in the region created a highly contested environment that disrupted traditional supply hubs in the Middle East, the Navy acknowledged in a statement reported by the Associated Press. These disruptions resulted in shortages and the loss of mail aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

According to the Navy’s statement published by the Associated Press, ship leadership prioritized mission-critical supplies by distributing items in a specific order: first food, then hygiene items, and finally mail. The Navy assured that sailors aboard the ship currently maintain access to clean water and healthy meal options.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed conditions aboard the carrier during a visit to Panama, telling reporters that reports of problems were completely misrepresented. According to the Associated Press, Hegseth stated that the military ensures every ship, crew, and captain receives all available provisions at every moment, while noting that he wants the sailors home and crews rotated as quickly as possible.

Legislative Scrutiny and Congressional Response

The conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have triggered pushback from lawmakers. Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wrote a letter to Navy leadership asking for responses to several questions regarding the vessel, noting that the deployment’s duration is especially significant given the context of continuing military operations against Iran, as reported by the Associated Press.

Similarly, Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego, a Marine Corps veteran, stated on social media that he aims to take a bipartisan delegation on an official oversight visit to the ship, characterizing the treatment of sailors as dangerous, according to the Associated Press.

To adjust forces in the region, the USS George Washington left port in Da Nang, Vietnam, accompanied by a cruiser and a destroyer, according to a Navy statement covered by the Associated Press. The strike group was subsequently spotted crossing the Singapore Strait.

A Navy official who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed to the Associated Press that the USS George Washington entered the Strait of Malacca, placing the carrier on a trajectory toward the Indian Ocean and ultimately the Middle East. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the Washington will replace the Lincoln as one of two aircraft carriers stationed in the region.

This repositioning leaves the Pacific waters without a U.S. carrier presence for an undetermined duration. The Trump administration views China as a settled force requiring deterrence rather than as a primary global adversary, according to the Associated Press reporting. Meanwhile, the Navy maintains a blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, with Hegseth indicating that the U.S. can sustain the blockade indefinitely.
