MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team battled valiantly but fell just short in a thrilling overtime loss to Morehead State, 70-69, in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both squads.The Skyhawks (4-8, 0-1 OVC) controlled the majority of the game, leading by as manny as 11 points in the second half. Though, the Eagles (5-6, 1-0 OVC) clawed their way back, forcing overtime with a late surge.
Despite holding a five-point advantage with under two minutes remaining in the extra period, UT martin couldn’t hold on.Morehead State scored the final six points of the game, capped off by a go-ahead layup with 15 seconds left on the clock.
“It was a tough loss,” said UT Martin head coach Ryan Ridder. “We played hard and had our chances, but we just couldn’t finish it off. We need to learn from this and come back stronger.”
Tarence Guinyard led the Skyhawks with 17 points,adding three assists and two steals. Matija Žužić chipped in 12 points, while Vladimer Salaridze and Afan trnka each scored 10 points. Trnka dished out a team-high five assists,while Salaridze grabbed five rebounds.
UT Martin won the turnover battle 16-9, showcasing their defensive tenacity.
Jerone Morton paced Morehead State with 18 points and seven assists. Tyler Brelsford added 13 points, and Steven Clay contributed 11 points for the Eagles.
The Skyhawks will look to bounce back on Saturday, Dec. 17,when they travel to face Southern Indiana.
