india’s premier professional table tennis league, Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT), is currently holding its sixth season in Ahmedabad. Eight teams are vying for the trophy at the EKA Arena, with the competition running from May 29 to June 15, 2025.
Since its inception in 2017, UTT has significantly boosted the sport, showcasing top international and domestic talent. The league has played a crucial role in developing Indian table tennis, offering emerging players a platform to compete and develop in a professional environment. Co-founder of Ultimate Table Tennis, vita Dani, recently spoke about the league’s vision and impact.
Dabang Delhi TTC, Goa Challengers, U Mumba TT, Chennai Lions, Jaipur Patriots, Ahmedabad SG Pipers, Pune Jaguars, and Kolkata ThunderBlades comprise this year’s teams.these squads feature elite Indian and international players, including Manika Batra and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, coached by renowned figures. Matches follow a league-to-playoff format and are broadcast on Star Sports and JioHotstar.
Vita Dani discussed her vision for Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT), explaining how her experience in other sports ventures informs her management of UTT, and her strategies for securing long-term sponsorships.
When we started this journey with Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT), I had just one dream, and that dream still continues: to help India win an Olympic medal in table tennis… We are steadily moving toward that goal… So yes, that remains the ultimate goal: an Olympic medal for India.
Dani emphasized the importance of learning from other sports leagues and adapting best practices to table tennis. UTT has experimented with innovations like the Golden Point rule and mixed doubles matches to enhance the broadcast experience. According to Dani, some of these innovations are now being adopted in other global tournaments.
Having a great coach, being physically and mentally fit, those are all essential. But equally crucial is having a strong sparring partner and quality match practice. That’s what UTT brings to the table… This kind of exposure is priceless.
From a business standpoint, Dani noted the consistency in UTT’s sponsorships, highlighting that all inventory was sold out last year, a trend that continues. She stressed the importance of broader financial support for table tennis, extending beyond the league to grassroots, state, and national levels.
A partnership with a big broadcaster like JioStar is strategic, not just for us as a league, but for the sport itself. It’s a win-win situation. JioStar is looking to grow, and so are we. With their reach and our product, we can amplify the sport’s visibility.
Dani said that UTT’s immediate financial focus is on ensuring that franchises break even and become profitable. She noted that one franchise has already achieved this milestone. For her, the true return on investment lies in the performance of Indian players on the international stage.
What’s next
Looking ahead, Ultimate Table Tennis plans to solidify its financial model, aiming for all franchises to achieve profitability while continuing to elevate the standard of table tennis in India and striving for success on the global stage.
