Uvalde Mom Documentary: Anayansi Prado Interview
“Uvalde Mom” Documentary Examines School Shooting Aftermath
A new documentary,”uvalde Mom,” explores the aftermath of the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde,Texas, three years after the event. The film centers on Angeli Rose Gomez, a mother who famously entered the school to rescue her children amid the chaos and inaction of law enforcement. The Uvalde school shooting claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers.
Gomez, hailed as a hero for her courage, is the focus of Anayansi prado’s film, which delves into the broader forces at play within the Uvalde community that contributed to the shooting and its aftermath. The documentary, “Uvalde Mom,” premiered at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.
Prado saeid she was motivated to make the film after seeing the affected families on television. She felt a connection to the Latino, Mexican American community and the agricultural farming town.
Initially, Prado struggled to connect with people in Uvalde, but Gomez eventually responded, leading to a close collaboration. Prado learned about Gomez’s past struggles with the criminal justice system, drawing parallels to the community’s systemic failures surrounding the school shooting.
“All I wanted that day was my kids to come out of the school alive, and that’s what I got,” Gomez says in the film. “I don’t want to be called a hero… the only job that I did that day was being a mom.”
Prado structured the film to reflect the surreal experiance of witnessing both Gomez’s personal journey and the larger issues of accountability and cover-up. Access to city officials was limited,so the film relies on news archives to depict that aspect of the story. The production team maintained a low profile during filming due to Gomez’s probation and concerns about retaliation.
Prado emphasized that “Uvalde Mom” is a personal portrait, selectively interviewing individuals like Gomez’s friend Tina, a local activist; Arnie, a shooting survivor and teacher; and Gomez’s legal team to provide a comprehensive narrative about the Uvalde school shooting.
The film’s premiere at South by Southwest drew a large crowd from Uvalde, with strong reactions to the issues raised. Prado hopes the film will bring renewed attention to Uvalde and encourage further storytelling about the community’s ongoing struggles.
What’s next
Prado hopes that “Uvalde Mom” will encourage further inquiry and storytelling about the Uvalde community, particularly regarding the lack of closure and accountability following the Robb Elementary shooting. She also hopes the film will put Uvalde back into the headlines.
