As a young teenager, around 14 or 15, involvement in the youth group at my Evangelical church was a highlight. Table tennis, celebrations, a swimming lake, and even helping to shape church services filled our time. The annual free time was always anticipated. However, one year, disappointment struck when our request to hold a late carnival party after Ash Wednesday was denied.
“It doesn’t work,” our pastor, a man we held in high regard, explained. His reason: “There is already a passion time,” a period of quiet reflection, particularly in the parish hall.
We, the youth group, were frustrated. We were eager to contribute to a vibrant church community and appreciated the trust shown to us by church leaders. The denial felt like a setback. The reason, “Passion time,” seemed to imply that Jesus’ suffering meant we were forbidden from celebrating.
Decades later, this experience remains a point of reflection. Over time, a deeper understanding of the church year has emerged. The church year, with its blend of joy and sorrow, party and silence, acts as a guide for the soul.
Today,I choose to forgo certain celebrations, not out of obligation or prohibition, but because my soul benefits from the stillness leading up to Easter. The period of Lent, once a source of youthful frustration, has become a valuable time for introspection and spiritual readiness.
