Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) claims Kurbonov was recruited by Ukraine’s security service and promised $100,000 and resettlement in a European Union country in exchange for killing Kirillov. The FSB alleges Kurbonov picked up a homemade bomb in Moscow, placed it on an e-scooter, and parked it at the entrance to kirillov’s apartment building. He then reportedly monitored the location and livestreamed the scene to his handlers in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro before detonating the bomb remotely.
The SBU has confirmed its involvement in the attack, describing Kirillov as a “war criminal and an entirely legitimate target.”
Kirillov was under sanctions from several countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada, for his role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia denies using chemical weapons in the conflict and has accused Ukraine of deploying toxic agents in combat.
This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, raising concerns about the potential for further targeted attacks.
