Uzhgorod becomes a Key European Rail hub
Uzhgorod, Ukraine, has become the first regional centre in the country directly connected by rail to four cities within the European Union: Bratislava, Košice, budapest, and Vienna. This development, announced on September 5, 2023, marks a significant step in Ukraine’s integration with the European railway network.
A 22-kilometer section of railway built to European standards, running from Uzhgorod to Chop, facilitated the launch of these new international routes.Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Oleksiy Kuleba, highlighted the importance of this infrastructure project in a statement on September 5, 2023.
Ticket Availability and New Timetable
Tickets for the new international routes were available for purchase starting September 5, 2023, through several channels. Passengers can book tickets via the Booking.uz.gov.ua application and website, as well as directly on the websites of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) and Slovak Railways (ZSSK).
The introduction of a new timetable in December 2023 provides convenient connections with domestic Ukrainian trains, including overnight services. This allows passengers to, for example, depart Kyiv in the evening, arrive in uzhgorod in the morning, and continue their journey to a european destination without needing to change trains.
Future Expansion: Lviv and Beyond
the current project is not the end of the line.Future plans include extending the European standard railway from Uzhgorod to Lviv. The construction of the Sknilov – Mostyska – 2 segment will create a direct rail link from Lviv to Poland and othre EU countries.
The European Union has already committed 76 million euros in grant funding to support these expansion projects,demonstrating its commitment to strengthening transport links between Ukraine and the EU.
