Ramasubramanian, a former Supreme Court judge renowned for his progressive rulings, has been appointed as the ninth chairperson of India’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The appointment, announced on Monday, fills a vacancy left by Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra, whose tenure ended on June 1.

Ramasubramanian brings a wealth of experience to the role,having served on the Supreme Court from 2019 to 2023.Prior to that, he held positions as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and as a judge in both the Madras and Telangana High Courts.
