The women of Great Britain and Ireland’s golf team clinched their first Vagliano Trophy since 2005, overcoming the Continent of europe in a tense showdown. The biennial match, held at the Royal Hague golf & Country Club in the Netherlands, saw GB&I emerge victorious with a score of 12½-11½.
Maria Dunne, the non-playing captain, guided GB&I to victory despite trailing by a point heading into the singles matches. Europe initially gained momentum with two early wins. However, the GB&I team, featuring several players fresh off a Curtis Cup win, mounted a comeback.
The English trio of Patience Rhodes, Nellie Ong, and Isla McDonald-O’Brien secured crucial wins. Aine Donegan of Ireland and Sophia fullbrook of england then propelled GB&I across the finish line, sealing the dramatic victory. This win marks the first Vagliano trophy for Great Britain and Ireland in two decades.
Dunne expressed her excitement after the match. ”It’s been an amazing day,” Dunne said. “I said to the team early this morning that I had a really good feeling about today. They did the job in the foursomes, momentum went our way and they just fought. I told them last night ‘just keep fighting, keep fighting for every single point or half point’ and that’s exactly what they did.”
Rhodes, Donegan, beth coulter, Lottie Woad, and Hannah Darling, all veterans of the Curtis Cup-winning team, played pivotal roles in this latest triumph. While Woad and Coulter faced defeats against Paula Martin Sampedro and Carolina Lopez-Chacarra Coto, respectively, Ong’s dominant 6&5 victory shifted the momentum. McDonald-O’Brien’s narrow 2&1 win over Camille Min-Gaultier further closed the gap, and Rhodes ultimately delivered a critical point with a two-hole victory against France’s Sara Brentcheneff.
