L’EAU D’HEURE,⁤ Belgium – ⁤A major cycling event in southern Belgium was abruptly canceled Sunday after a large-scale collision left more then 40 cyclists⁤ injured, according to race organizers and witnesses. The ‍incident ⁣occurred during the Gran Fondo⁣ Belgium, a competition drawing both semi-professional and amateur riders.

The race, which began at the dam of Lake L’Eau d’Heure, saw approximately 2,500 participants divided into multiple starting groups. ⁣shortly after the start, a pile-up ⁣occurred, scattering​ cyclists and bicycle parts across the roadway.

To avoid that fall,⁢ everyone‌ turned out to the left, ​and the big fall happened.‌ Everyone screamed in ‍pain.”

Rick Groeneweg,​ a cyclist from Bilthoven, Netherlands, escaped with minor‍ injuries, including a scratch ⁣and a broken front wheel. “We cycled⁢ about 50 kilometers⁤ per hour, and more⁣ than 50 people⁣ fell over⁣ each other like Mikado Stocks,” Groeneweg said. ⁣”There were bicycle‌ parts on the asphalt everywhere, and there was blood. ​The sound of breaking carbon ‌bikes ​was really horrible.”

The collision occurred approximately eight kilometers into‍ the race, within the first two starting groups. Groeneweg,​ a regular participant in Gran Fondo events, noted the unusually large ​size of the initial group, comprising 500 cyclists.”Normally, those groups are smaller,” he said. “Such a ⁣large starting ⁣group is asking for problems.”

This marked the inaugural Gran Fondo event held⁤ in Belgium. The top 25 finishers in⁢ each age category were slated to qualify for the Gran Fondo World Cup.
