Valla raises $2.7M to make legal recourse more accessible to employees
Valla Secures $2.7M to Expand AI-Powered Legal Access for Workers
Updated June 03, 2025
valla, a startup seeking to make legal support more accessible, has raised £2 million (about $2.7 million) in seed funding. Ada Ventures led the round, with participation from Active Partners, Portfolio Ventures, Techstart, and Resolution Foundation.
Danae Shell, Valla’s founder, launched the company in 2022 after observing how frequently enough workers abandoned legal claims due to complexity and cost. Valla focuses on employment law, providing tools for users to gather evidence, generate documents, and receive coaching from legal experts.
The platform has reportedly helped over 12,000 workers file complaints and negotiate settlements with employers. Valla uses AI to streamline knowledge transfer, acting as a “legal secretary” to brief coaches, take notes, and manage administrative tasks.
Shell said the integration of generative AI in early 2023,combined with early product traction, demonstrated the potential of Valla to investors.
The new funding will be used to enhance marketing efforts, build relationships with worker unions and insurers, and develop additional AI features. Valla plans to expand beyond employment law into small claims and tenancy issues, with future expansion into the U.S. and Europe.
“The basic thesis of Valla was, ‘If we can build tools that let someone file their tax return from their mobile phone, surely we can build something that can definitely help them manage their own legal issue,’” Shell said.
What’s next
Valla intends to broaden its services to include small claims and tenancy disputes, with eventual expansion into the U.S. and European markets, further solidifying its mission to democratize legal support and worker’s rights.
