Our costume team, the dressers, were constantly moving things, transporting props and costumes back and forth. we even brought in two amazing young men whose sole job was to carry and move things. we stuck to the schedule, working tirelessly.”

The extended renovation,though,unexpectedly yielded a positive outcome for Valmiera. The former city boiler house was transformed into a vibrant new arts space called “Kurtuve” (The Workshop), serving as the theater’s temporary home.

“Knowing that Valmiera was preparing for its role as the European capital of Culture in 2027,and seeing their plans and the Valmiera Summer Theater Festival,we realized that abandoning the cultural centers wasn’t an option,” Ašeradena recalls. “There was even a humorous suggestion from ‘Nekustamie Īpašumi’ (Real Estate) to use the ‘SEB bank’ branch, which was entirely unsuitable and would have restricted our working hours.”

The idea for “Kurtuve” struck in the middle of the night,Ašeradena says. “It became a creative hub, a place where we coudl perform and connect with the city. This,I believe,is a huge gain.”

The theater’s success at Spēlmaņu Nakts, where they received eight awards, is a fitting reward for their dedication and perseverance.

“It’s a natural outcome of our hard work,” Ašeradena says. “We’re climbing this mountain, and our backpack is getting heavier, but we’re savoring every step of the journey.”
