VALPARAÍSO, Chile (AP) — Trucking guilds in the Valparaíso region⁢ began bypassing a mandatory port parking lot on April 1, citing safety ‍concerns and increased costs for ⁤drivers. The guilds, representing a significant‍ portion of the⁣ region’s trucking operations, allege the parking lot fails to meet minimum safety standards and ‌reduces competitiveness.

Union Action

The Federation of Truck Owners of the Fifth Region (Fedequinta), the Association of truck Owners of San Antonio (AGEC), and the Transportist Guild Group of San ‍Antonio informed their members late yesterday of the action. As⁤ of midnight April 1, trucks are proceeding directly to the STI and DPWORLD terminals to drop off and collect cargo, avoiding ⁤the ASAT parking lot located 6 miles upstream from the port.

According to the unions, this measure, affecting an estimated 70% of trucks operating ⁢in the Valparaíso region, will remain in effect⁢ until further notice.

Safety Concerns

“We had to take this pressure measure,” said Iván Mateluna, president of Fedequinta. “as a guild,we cannot allow our drivers to be in a⁤ place that does not meet the‌ minimum safety conditions, which translates into uncertainty during‍ each stay‍ in the parking lot. We proposed this to ‌EPSA, and unluckily, our requests were not taken into consideration.”

Increased costs and Delays

AGEC carriers also⁤ voiced concerns about increased fuel costs associated with using the ASAT parking lot, estimating an additional 12 miles per round trip. The manager of AGEC stated that ASAT leads⁣ to additional waiting times, negatively impacting drivers’ quality of life and reducing their ability to secure additional transport jobs. The ⁢added cost is ultimately‌ borne by the truck owners.

Port Operations unaffected

Despite‌ the truckers’ actions, Fredes, a representative from one of the trucking groups, indicated that port terminals were operating smoothly. “Throughout the⁣ morning, the port terminals were receiving charging vehicles‌ without⁤ problems, so we will continue without using the ASAT,” ‌Fredes said.
