Wout van Aert thought he’d be good for his first cyclocross win of the season in TuesdayS stop in the Superprestige, especially with longtime Dutch nemesis Mathieu van der Poel sitting this one out.
Instead, van Aert was bettered by another Flying Dutchman in the mud in the form of rising star Tibor Del Grosso.
The 22-year-old delivered a stunner at the Superprestige Heusden-Zolder to stay equal with and then out-kick Van Aert in a two-up throw to the line.
“I was determined to fight for the win today,” Del Grosso said after the race. “I was pretty calm in the final. As we had a good lead, I could play poker. I was surprised Wout didn’t start his sprint earlier.”
