Sibğatullah Bilmez, a 28-year-old acting imam residing in the İpekyolu district, climbs difficult paths to lead daily prayers at the historic Süleyman Han Camii. Bilmez takes approximately 5,000 steps to reach the rocky elevation of roughly 100 meters where the summit mosque stands. Although the exact construction date of the mosque remains undocumented, historical records establish that Kanuni Sultan Süleyman restored the structure in 1534. Bilmez assumed his duties at the site five months ago under the appointment of the Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı and local müftülük offices, marking a routine of physical endurance paired with religious and cultural outreach.
Daily Climb to the Summit Mosque
Bilmez initiates his journey from the Atatürk Kültür Parkı before navigating the steep terrain to reach the top of the Van Kalesi structure. Because the structure falls under the administration of the museum directorate, regular congregants do not attend night and morning prayers, limiting active communal prayer gatherings primarily to midday visits alongside tourists. The daily routine requires Bilmez to descend the identical pathway following evening prayers. He stated that the physical demands of the route bring him personal fulfillment despite the exhaustion.

Visitor Engagement and Language Skills
Beyond leading prayers, Bilmez interacts directly with domestic and international visitors who ascend the fortress grounds. The daily contact with foreign travelers provided an environment for him to practice and advance his foreign language capabilities. Bilmez noted that he now conducts informational discussions in English concerning the architecture of the mosque, the Urartu fortress, and the historical context of Old Van. These interactions often involve question-and-answer exchanges regarding Islamic religious principles, creating an educational exchange for both the visiting public and the acting imam.
