Mathieu van der Poel has expressed his satisfaction with his recent spell in teh yellow jersey at the Tour de France, admitting he savoured the experience even more knowing it would be temporary. The Dutch star, who claimed stage 2 of the race, is now shifting his focus to supporting his Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates after the unfortunate crash-out of sprinter Jasper Philipsen.
A Cherished, Fleeting Moment in Yellow
Van der Poel, who relinquished the coveted Maillot Jaune after his second stint, reflected on the demanding nature of leading the race. “I sometiems wonder how everyone else recovers like that every day.I’m glad I can focus mainly on the Classics,” he commented, highlighting his personal race priorities. “I really enjoyed my yellow jersey. Perhaps even more than the first few days, because I was aware that I would lose it.”
The alpecin-Deceuninck team has faced a setback with the withdrawal of their key sprinter, Jasper Philipsen, following a crash on stage 3. This leaves Van der Poel and Kaden Groves as the primary focus for the team’s ambitions in the upcoming stages.
Shifting focus to Team Support and Stage Wins
The immediate future for Van der Poel involves a shift to a support role, particularly for the upcoming sprint stages to Laval and Chateauroux. He is expected to be on lead-out duty for Australian sprinter Kaden Groves, a multiple Grand Tour stage winner. However, Van der Poel remains pragmatic about his own opportunities.
“I haven’t looked at all what is to come, I try to take it day by day, but it has already been a super successful Tour for me,” he stated. Despite the demanding nature of the race and the physical toll of wearing yellow, Van der Poel is determined to chase further success. “But I will definitely try to go for a stage win in the second and third week of the Tour.”
Van der Poel’s Impact on the Tour de France
While Van der Poel may not profess a deep love for the Tour de France, particularly after the gruelling days spent in the lead, his presence has undoubtedly added significant excitement and attacking flair to the race. As one of the modern peloton’s most dynamic riders, his aggressive style and ability to contend for victories have made him a captivating figure. His spell in yellow, though brief, underscored his status as a top contender and a key rider for Alpecin-Deceuninck.
