Van Gerwen Survives Dolan Scare to Advance at World Darts Championship
London, England – three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen escaped a major upset Wednesday, battling past a determined Brendan Dolan to reach the fourth round of the World Darts Championship. The Dutchman, seeded third, ultimately prevailed 4-2 in a match that showcased both his brilliance and vulnerability.
Van Gerwen, known for his explosive scoring and clinical finishing, found himself trailing early after Dolan, the 30th seed, snatched the opening set. The Dutchman responded with a dominant run, winning eight consecutive legs to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
“It was tough, it was really hard and a really difficult game,” Van Gerwen admitted after the match. “Everybody can see he never gives up and you have to try and punish him at the right moments, and I wasn’t capable of doing it.”
Despite his eventual victory, Van Gerwen’s performance was marked by inconsistency. After a blistering fourth set where he averaged an extraordinary 118.66, his form dipped dramatically in the fifth, allowing Dolan to claw back a set. Van Gerwen’s struggles with doubles, a recurring theme throughout the year, resurfaced in the final set, but he ultimately managed to secure the win.
“There is a lot of work still to do and I know I’m capable of doing it,” Van Gerwen said, looking ahead. “I’m looking forward to the next round and let it roll on.”
In the next round, Van Gerwen will face either Jeffrey de Graaf of Sweden or the Philippines’ Paolo Nebrida, both unseeded players.Earlier in the evening, 15th seed chris Dobey overcame a spirited challenge from 18th seed Josh Rock, also winning 4-2. The match was a tight affair, with Rock taking early leads before Dobey found his rhythm and pulled away.Dobey’s consistent scoring and clinical finishing proved decisive, setting up a fourth-round clash against either Kevin Doets of the Netherlands or Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski.
The world Darts Championship continues with more thrilling matchups in the coming days.
Van Gerwen’s Shaky Start: A Fan’s Viewpoint
Sarah: Did you catch the darts last night? That Van Gerwen match was wild!
Tom: No way! I missed it. How did it go? I thought he was supposed to breeze through this round.
Sarah: He did win, but it was much closer than anyone expected. You no Brendan Dolan, the 30th seed? He really gave MvG a run for his money.
tom: Dolan? That guy can actually hang with Van Gerwen? ![]()
sarah: Seriously! He took the first set and kept MvG on his toes the whole match. Van Gerwen was up 3-1 but then Dolan clawed back a set in the fifth. It was nerve-wracking!
Tom: Wow, that’s crazy. was Van Gerwen just off his game?
Sarah: He was definitely inconsistent. He had some amazing bursts, like that fourth set where his average was over 118! But then he struggled with doubles again. You know, those pesky double-outs that can make or break a match.
Tom: Yeah, those doubles can be a killer. Did he seem rattled at all?
Sarah: He admitted afterwards that Dolan was a tough opponent. Apparently,Dolan never gives up,and MvG had to really work hard to punish his mistakes – which he couldn’t always do.
Tom: So, he pulled it out in the end? I guess that’s what champions do?
Sarah:
Exactly! He’s through to the next round, but he’s got work to do if he wants to win this thing. He’s facing either de Graaf or Nebrida next. Both unseeded, but you know, anything can happen in darts!
tom: True, true. Sounds like we need to keep watching!
