Shane van Gisbergen cemented his status as NASCAR’s preeminent road-course driver with a dominant performance at the 2026 Go Bowling at The Glen, securing his seventh career NASCAR Cup Series victory and the first of the season for Trackhouse Racing. In a race that unfolded with the kind of late-race drama and strategic brilliance that defines Watkins Glen, van Gisbergen delivered a masterclass in speed and precision, overcoming a near-30-second deficit to the leaders in just 18 laps and ultimately winning by 7.2 seconds over Michael McDowell.

Van Gisbergen, driving the No. 97 SuperFile Chevrolet, started from the pole position and led the first 18 laps before executing a short pit stop strategy that paid off handsomely. After the final pit cycle, he closed the gap on Ty Gibbs, who had led the late-race charge for those who had cut out a pit stop. With eight laps remaining, van Gisbergen passed Gibbs for the lead and never looked back, crossing the line in commanding fashion.

McDowell, who had been leading the race after the final pit stops, finished second, while Gibbs took third. Chase Briscoe and Tyler Reddick rounded out the top five, with Austin Dillon, AJ Allmendinger, Kyle Busch, Austin Cindric, and John-Hunter Nemechek completing the top ten. The race was notable for its cleanliness, with only Cody Ware failing to finish and 32 of 38 starters completing all 100 laps on the lead lap.

Van Gisbergen’s win was particularly significant as it marked his second consecutive victory at Watkins Glen, having also won in 2025. His ability to dominate the challenging road course has made him NASCAR’s go-to driver for road and street races, and this latest triumph underscores his consistency and skill in high-pressure situations.

“Unbelievable to win with 97,” van Gisbergen said after the race. “This SuperFile Chevy was great. Thank you to Trackhouse. We weren’t very good in practice, and then qualifying was amazing. Good tweaks, and then today, so what a race car.” He later added, “It’s not easy. Everyone is really good. There was a lot of pressure there, and I think McDowell was good, Connor [Zilisch] was good. Tyler Reddick. There was a lot of good guys and a lot of pressure. Just stoked for these guys, you know, to execute every facet of our game. Speechless. This is so cool.”

Van Gisbergen led a total of 74 laps during the race, more than any other driver, and also won Stage 2, while teammate Ross Chastain claimed Stage 1. Connor Zilisch earned the fastest lap bonus with a time of 1:12.541.

The victory not only solidified van Gisbergen’s reputation as a road-course specialist but also provided a strong start to the 2026 season for Trackhouse Racing. With the points standings now updated, van Gisbergen’s performance at Watkins Glen will be a key talking point as the Cup Series moves forward.

The race was not without its moments of tension, including a tense exchange between Spire teammates Daniel Suárez and Jimmie Johnson’s son, Christian Hocevar, who famously radioed to his team, “Daniel can go f*** himself and that he will never let him go again,” after a door rub. However, the focus remained on van Gisbergen’s extraordinary drive, which saw him overcome a significant deficit and deliver a race-winning performance under pressure.

As the NASCAR Cup Series continues, van Gisbergen’s dominance at road courses sets a high bar for his competitors, and fans can expect more thrilling races as the season progresses.
