Vance Luther Boelter Accused of Stalking, Killing Minnesota Lawmaker Melissa Hortman

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — vance Luther Boelter, 57, allegedly stalked his victims “like prey” before fatally shooting Minnesota state Rep. Melissa hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, according to federal prosecutors. Boelter is also accused of wounding state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, on the same night.
Acting U.S.Attorney for the District of Minnesota Joseph Thomson revealed chilling details about the case, alleging that Boelter surveilled the victims’ homes and meticulously documented his observations.

Notes recovered by investigators indicated Boelter’s focus on Melissa Hortman. One note read: “married Marj 2 children 11th term.” another described her residence: “Big house off golf course 2 ways in to watch from one spot.”
The night of the shootings, Boelter first went to the Hoffmans’ home disguised as a police officer, wearing a mask. he reportedly told the couple there had been a shooting in the area and inquired about weapons in the house. The Hoffmans became suspicious,and when they resisted his entry,Boelter allegedly forced his way inside and opened fire before fleeing after the Hoffmans’ daughter called 911.
Boelter then visited the home of another state representative, but left when he found no one there. Alerted to the situation, police dispatched an officer to the home of a New Hope lawmaker. The officer encountered Boelter’s vehicle, mistaking it for another officer’s car. When the officer attempted to speak with Boelter, he received no response. Boelter then left and drove to the Hortmans’ residence.
Upon arriving at the Hortmans’ home, two Brooklyn Park officers observed Boelter’s SUV. When Boelter saw them, he allegedly began firing and rushed into the house. Police returned fire, but Boelter escaped through the back of the house.
A target list recovered from Boelter’s car contained the names of dozens of Minnesota Democrats, including Hoffman, Hortman, Gov. Tim walz,U.S. Rep. Ilhan omar, and U.S. Sen. Tina Smith.
