The Upset: Vancouver‌ FC’s Path to the Final

OTTAWA – Vancouver FC has completed ‍an unlikely run⁣ to the Telus⁢ Canadian Championship final to meet the defending ‍champion ⁣Whitecaps.

Vancouver FC hung on to complete ⁣a semifinal upset of Atletico Ottawa‍ on Thursday, ⁢losing 1-0 on the night but advancing 3-2 on aggregate to set up the all-Vancouver ⁣showdown Oct. 1 at B.C. place Stadium.

vancouver FC is currently ⁢mired in the Canadian Premier League basement at‌ 2-15-6. The ‌Whitecaps, in⁤ contrast, stand sixth ⁣overall in Major League Soccer ⁤and ‌are the best Canadian MLS team this ‌season.

Vancouver FC entered Thursday’s game with a 35-point deficit behind second-place ‌Ottawa (13-2-8), ‍but held a crucial ⁢3-1 lead after the first leg in Langley, B.C. ⁣on August 13th.

Ottawa needed to win by three goals ‌to advance – ⁢or force a penalty shootout with a two-goal victory. The ‍tournament has eliminated the away goals rule.

Ottawa pressed hard throughout the match, but could only ⁣manage a 45th-minute goal by ‌david Rodriguez. Vancouver’s defense proved resilient, conceding only once.

Statistical⁢ Disparity and Ottawa’s‌ Frustration

Despite Ottawa boasting the CPL’s⁤ most potent attack with 46 goals this season (averaging two per‌ game),Vancouver managed‌ to limit thier scoring opportunities.Vancouver has‌ scored 27 goals‌ while conceding a league-worst 52 goals.

“We lost this game in the first leg‌ … I thought‍ today we did well.⁤ We just couldn’t find that second (goal) ‍and create a few more chances,” said Ottawa⁢ midfielder ‍Manny Aparicio.

“We paid for our bad decisions in the first leg,”⁢ added Ottawa’s coach Diego Mejia.
