VANK Advocates for Improved Africa Representation in South Korean Textbooks
SEOUL, South Korea (May 1, 2025) — Cyber diplomacy group VANK is pushing for revisions in South Korean elementary school textbooks to provide a more nuanced and accurate portrayal of Africa. An analysis of sixth-grade social studies textbooks revealed a tendency to depict Africa solely as a recipient of aid, overlooking its diversity and growth.
Textbook Analysis Reveals Skewed Perceptions
According to VANK, current textbooks often present a one-dimensional view of the continent, failing to capture the multifaceted realities of its 54 countries. This limited perspective can perpetuate harmful stereotypes among young students.

Park Ji-eun,VANK Representative
VANK argues that textbooks should showcase the continent’s diverse cultures, languages, and religions. Africa boasts approximately 3,000 ethnic groups, over 2,000 languages (representing 30% of the world’s total), and a rich tapestry of religious beliefs, including Christianity (50%), Islam (40%), and indigenous faiths (9%).
Promoting Balanced Perspectives
While some textbooks highlight South Africa as a positive example, especially its role in hosting the World Cup, VANK emphasizes the need to broaden the scope of representation. The institution suggests including details about Ethiopia and South africa’s contributions during the Korean War as examples of positive engagement between korea and African nations.

Expanding Awareness Initiatives
VANK plans to extend its analysis to secondary school textbooks, aiming to address any further misrepresentations of Africa in history and social studies curricula. The organization is also launching a public awareness campaign centered around the phrase “Africa is □,” encouraging people to challenge their preconceived notions about the continent.
