Italian Far-Right Faces Division as Former General Launches New Party
Rome, February 4, 2026 – Italy’s far-right political landscape is undergoing a shift as Roberto Vannacci, a former general and current Member of the European Parliament, formally moves to establish a new political party, Futuro Nazionale (National Future). This development marks a potential split from Matteo Salvini’s League and could reshape the Italian right wing, according to reports.
Vannacci registered the name and logo of Futuro Nazionale on January 24, according to trademark filings. The move follows weeks of internal tensions within the League, culminating in a perceived break between Vannacci and Salvini. Recent social media activity, including Instagram accounts appearing on Wednesday, seemingly promoting the new party with the message “Italy, we are coming,” prompted a response from the League, attempting to downplay the situation.
Salvini stressed on Thursday that there was “no problem” and that the League could accommodate “different sensibilities.” However, Vannacci distanced himself from the social media posts, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that he was not behind them, but left open the possibility of launching official channels in the future. “If I decide to open such channels it will be my honor to inform you,” he wrote.
Italian media describe Vannacci’s project as an attempt to create an Italian version of Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, positioning it further to the right of Salvini’s League. Vannacci, known for his nationalist and anti-immigration views, has been a controversial figure, with critics accusing him of historical revisionism.
The League’s Salvini had been expected to meet with Vannacci to discuss the growing rift, but Vannacci’s latest move appears to reduce the likelihood of reconciliation. Salvini assured reporters on January 29 that there was “no problem,” and that the League has room for “different sensibilities.” He stated he would meet with Vannacci “when I deem it appropriate.”
Vannacci, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, expressed ambitions for his new movement, aiming for a significant share of the vote – “Six, ten, fifteen, twenty percent.” He described Futuro Nazionale as currently being “just a symbol,” but indicated a long-held desire to pursue this path.
The President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, described Vannacci’s actions as an “anomaly” within the League, noting that while differing approaches can be enriching, creating separate organizations and depositing a new logo is unusual.
Vannacci’s political career gained momentum after his participation in a book presentation alongside Salvini on April 30, 2024. However, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto previously criticized Vannacci for expressing opinions that “discredit the army, the defense ministry and the constitution.”
The core values of Futuro Nazionale, as outlined in a manifesto posted online, emphasize national identity, tradition, and a firm stance on immigration. Vannacci’s platform includes concepts like “remigration” for those who do not integrate and a strong emphasis on the traditional family unit. He also stresses the importance of defending national borders and protecting Italian identity.
