UK Venture Capital Group Launches New £100mn Fund for Start-ups in Tech Hotspot

A venture capital group backed by Cambridge University has launched a new £100 million fund to invest in start-ups, aligned with the UK government’s plan to drive economic growth through higher education institutions. This significant investment aims to bolster the UK’s innovation landscape, particularly in the tech and life sciences sectors, which have shown impressive potential but often face funding challenges.

The new opportunities fund from Cambridge Innovation Capital includes substantial anchor investments from British Patient Capital, a subsidiary of the government-owned British Business Bank, and Aviva Investors. This fund marks a notable shift for the group, which has previously focused on earlier-stage investments. Now, it aims to support “scale-ups”—start-ups that have validated their business models and are poised for rapid growth.

“By the time you get to this ‘scale-up’ stage, 80 to 90 per cent of the capital is coming from overseas investors,” Andrew Williamson, the fund’s managing partner, explained. We welcome the foreign investment but there’s room for domestic funds to participate.”

CIC, which manages over £600 million in assets, is uniquely positioned with special access to deals from Cambridge University, specializing in companies spun out from university research. This includes innovations in life sciences and “deep tech”—innovations based on fundamental scientific advances. Recent investments include Pragmatic Semiconductor and Riverlane, both based in Cambridge.

“It is the group’s first fund for bets on so-called scale-ups, relatively advanced start-ups that have proven their business models and are looking to grow rapidly, while its other funds are focused on investing in companies that are in earlier stages of development,” the chief executive, Andrew Williamson, stated.

This fundraising initiative comes in the wake of the UK government’s strategic plan to enhance connectivity and development between the Oxford and Cambridge universities. Science secretary Peter Kyle has emphasized the importance of doubling the economic output of the “Oxford-Cambridge Arc,” a region known for its high-tech and life science innovations.

“What the government is doing correctly is looking at where are the most impactful investments,” Williamson affirmed, aligning the fund’s goals with broader government strategies. “We think that by focusing on the most innovative and high-growth companies, we can significantly contribute to the region’s economic success and innovation ecosystem.”

The initiative is part of a larger trend in UK venture capital aiming to support companies emerging from university research. Other notable funds in this space include Oxford Science Enterprises, which was founded in 2015, and Northern Gritstone, focused on start-ups from Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield universities.

Northern Gritstone, launched in 2021, has already raised over 312mn pounds in 2023. The fund is currently in the process of securing additional capital, aiming for a further $50 million in funding, according to a source familiar with the matter. The exact details remain opaque, as Northern Gritstone opted not to provide additional comments.

The new fund is expected to bridge a crucial financing gap for advanced UK start-ups that often struggle to find domestic investors. This initiative reflects a growing trend in the UK’s venture capital landscape, where global competition for cutting-edge technologies is intensifying,

“We feel immensely excited to see how this significant step will nurture and elevate the promising advancements emerging from Cambridge, our tomorrow’s trailblazers and game-changers.”

In the broader context, this development could be seen as a model for other regions globally, including the U.S., where similar efforts to foster innovation and economic growth through university-based start-ups are underway. The success of initiatives in the UK could provide valuable insights and best practices for American universities and venture capital firms looking to replicate such models.

“I think we’ve got some of those in our portfolio and this fund will be scaling those up.”

The ability of the UK to foster and grow high-potential start-ups could also serve as a valuable case study for start-ups and investors in the US. As the UK looks to double the economic output of the Oxford-Cambridge Arc, similar initiatives in the U.S. could benefit from a focused approach on university-based ventures with transformative potential.
