The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin replacing the Campbells Creek Bridge along Route 656 in Hanover County on April 13, 2026.

The project requires a short-term detour as the road, known as Mount Hermon Road, will be closed between Goddins Hill and Stumpy roads. The closure is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. On Monday, April 13, 2026, and is expected to remain in effect through Summer 2026, weather permitting.

Motorists are advised to follow posted detour signs, which will direct traffic using Route 657 (Ashcake Road) and Route 659 (Cheroy Road).

Bridge Specifications

Technical requirements for the replacement structure include the use of pre-cast concrete bridge slabs. The design for the bridge incorporates a 27-inch concrete railing system.

The construction specifications for the pre-cast structures include several specialized features:

  • Exterior slab sections will feature fascia with drip beads.
  • Slab units will include shear keys on the inside vertical faces.
  • The structure will utilize lateral post tensioning hardware, specifically 1ΒΌ inch diameter galvanized structural rods meeting ASTM 449 standards.

The bridge is designed for HL-93 loading and will include a three-inch asphalt overlay.
