New research from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, published in BMC Nutrition, suggests a plant-based approach could improve insulin sensitivity and glycemic control.

People with type 1 diabetes require insulin therapy because their bodies do not produce enough of this hormone. However, some individuals with type 1 diabetes also experience insulin resistance, a condition where cells don’t respond effectively to insulin, leading to elevated blood glucose levels.

Significant Reduction in Insulin Dosage Observed in Study
The recent study, a secondary analysis of a 2024 Physicians Committee study, compared the effects of a low-fat vegan diet to a portion-controlled diet in a group of adults with type 1 diabetes. Researchers focused on how each dietary approach impacted insulin use and the financial burden of insulin therapy.
The findings revealed a substantial reduction in insulin dosage among those following the vegan diet. Participants in the vegan group decreased their total daily insulin dose by 28%, equivalent to 12.1 units per day. This contrasts sharply with the portion-controlled group, which showed no statistically significant change in insulin requirements. Researchers attribute this reduction to improved insulin sensitivity – the body’s ability to respond effectively to insulin.
Beyond improved metabolic control, the vegan diet also translated into financial savings. Participants in the vegan group experienced a 27%, or $1.08 per day, decrease in total daily insulin costs, while those on the portion-controlled diet saw no significant change in expenses.
Additional Health Benefits Beyond Insulin Management
The original 2024 study, upon which this analysis is based, highlighted a range of additional health benefits associated with the low-fat vegan diet. Participants experienced an average weight loss of 11 pounds, alongside improvements in insulin sensitivity and glycemic control. The plant-based diet was linked to positive changes in cholesterol levels and kidney function.
Rising Insulin Costs and the Need for Accessible Solutions
These findings arrive at a critical time, as insulin prices in the United States continue to climb. According to the American Diabetes Association, national spending on insulin reached $22.3 billion in 2022, a threefold increase over the past decade. This increase is driven by both rising usage and escalating prices. Even after adjusting for inflation, the cost of insulin rose by 24% between 2017 and 2022.
“As insulin prices continue to rise, people with type 1 diabetes should consider a low-fat vegan diet, which can help improve their insulin sensitivity and reduce the amount of insulin they need, potentially saving them hundreds of dollars a year,” explains Hana Kahleova, MD, PhD, lead author of the study and director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
The study reinforces the growing body of evidence suggesting that dietary interventions can play a significant role in managing type 1 diabetes. While insulin therapy remains essential for individuals with this condition, adopting a low-fat vegan diet may offer a complementary strategy for improving metabolic health, reducing medication needs, and alleviating financial strain.
