This 30 August, with the purpose of protecting the structure of the old Humilladero bridge, which has been deteriorating, both due to the passage of vehicles of illegal size, and by subjects who have undermined its masonry, the mayor of Popayán, Juan Carlos Muñoz Bravo did the decision to stop vehicle traffic through the area. This was reported by the president when sending a message to citizens about this emblematic site in the capital of Cauca.
“The message is to all Payanese people about the protection we must have on this bridge, which is considered an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), the heritage of the Payanese people and the Nation. The road that connects to Carrera 7 has been taken here, but unfortunately some vehicles that cross the height damage the bricks or the support of this bridge, which could weaken and collapse; That is why we have made the decision to stop the passage of vehicles through this place,” said Muñoz Bravo.
For her part, the Secretary of Municipal Transportation, Lizeth Venessa Plazas, said, “This is how we invite the entire community of Payanesa to tolerance and take the detours that connect the race towards Seventh Street, The north end of the humiliadero bridge is enabled to make the turn it does not “interferes and does not cause congestion to vehicular traffic in the area of influence.”
For her part, the Secretary of Culture and Tourism, Ofelia Castrillón, noted, “we are talking about an emblematic site of Popayán, we are talking about 150 years of history and therefore we have to take care of this great historical site which becomes one. culture and tourism space”.

The construction of this old bridge began in 1868 and was completed in 1873, which, according to the historian Diego Castrillón Arboleda, consists of 12 semicircular arches, the central two 12 meters wide between the bases, with a height of nine meters from the key to the Molino River and a false one leaning on the gorge, under whose shadow the workshop “La Herrería” was home for many years.
