Velde Scores in Timbers 2026 Preseason vs. San Jose Earthquakes

Timbers Fall to Earthquakes in Coachella Valley Invitational

INDIO, Calif. – The Portland Timbers suffered a 3-2 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes in their second match of the 2026 Coachella Valley Invitational on . Despite a brace from Designated Player Kristoffer Velde, the Timbers were unable to hold off a second-half surge from San Jose.

Portland fell behind early, conceding a goal to Preston Judd in the 20th minute. Judd entered the box, evaded a defender, and slotted a low right-footed shot past the goalkeeper, according to reports.

However, the Timbers responded strongly before halftime, fueled by Velde’s offensive prowess. The Norwegian attacker scored twice in quick succession, first with a left-footed strike in the 31st minute and then with a header in the 35th minute, putting Portland ahead 2-1. Antony provided the assist on Velde’s second goal, marking his first assist of the year.

The Earthquakes rallied in the second half, scoring two unanswered goals to secure the 3-2 victory. Details of those goals were not immediately available.

The match also marked the CVI debut for Timbers newcomer Brandon Bye, who started in today’s game.

This match followed a scoreless draw against D.C. United on , opening the preseason tournament for Portland.

The Timbers will conclude their participation in the 2026 Coachella Valley Invitational with a match against the Chicago Fire FC on , at 10:00 AM PT. The game will be streamed live on www.timbers.com.

Following the conclusion of the invitational, the Timbers will return to Portland to prepare for their regular season opener against the Columbus Crew on at Providence Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM PT.
