Venezuela Baseball Team Denied US Entry – World Series

July 26, 2025 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

Venezuela Barred from US Tournament Amidst Growing travel Restrictions

Easley, South Carolina – The Venezuelan Senior League Baseball team has been denied entry into the United States for the annual World Series tournament, a decision attributed to national security concerns cited by the Trump management. This exclusion marks a significant blow for the young athletes who had earned their right to represent Latin America on the international stage.

A Nation’s Disappointment

Kendrick Gutiérrez, the league’s president in Venezuela, expressed profound disappointment and confusion over the ruling. “They told us that Venezuela is on a list becuase Trump says Venezuelans are a threat to the security of his state, of his country,” Gutiérrez stated. “It hasn’t been easy, the situation; we earned the right to represent Latin America in the World Championship.”

The Senior League Baseball World Series, a prestigious event for players aged 13-16, is scheduled to commence in Easley, South Carolina. The Venezuelan team’s absence has led organizers to replace them with the Santa Maria de Aguayo team from Tamaulipas, Mexico, the runner-up in the Latin American championship.

“I think this is the first time this has happened, but it shouldn’t end this way,” Gutiérrez lamented. “They’re going to replace us with another team because relations have been severed; it’s not fair. I don’t understand why they put Mexico in at the last minute and left Venezuela out.”

A Pattern of Exclusion?

The exclusion of the Venezuelan team follows a series of recent incidents that have raised concerns about travel to the United States and its territories. Earlier this month, the Cuban women’s volleyball team was reportedly denied visas to participate in a tournament in Puerto Rico. Additionally, a high-profile Mexican boxer was arrested by ICE officials and later deported from the United States.

These events have fueled anxieties about how the U.S. will manage the influx of international participants for upcoming major sporting events, including the 2025 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games. The current climate suggests a potentially challenging surroundings for athletes and visitors from countries deemed to be of concern by the U.S.administration.

The Trump administration has previously implemented travel bans affecting numerous countries, citing national security as the primary justification. While the specific list of 12 countries has not been detailed in this report, the Venezuelan team’s experience highlights the tangible impact of these policies on international sports and cultural exchange.

The exclusion of the Venezuelan baseball team serves as a stark reminder of the complex geopolitical landscape that can affect the dreams and aspirations of young athletes, raising questions about fairness and the broader implications for international relations.
