Venezuela on the Brink: Unpacking the Turbulent Dance of Fascism, Anti-Fascism, and Foreign Interference
World Anti-Fascist Congress Held in Caracas Amidst Foiled Coup Attempt
On September 14, 2024, the Venezuelan government held a live press conference to discuss the recent failure of a coup attempt orchestrated by the US and Spanish intelligence services.
The Venezuelan government revealed that the coup attempt involved several individuals, including Jose Maria Bassoa Valdovinos and Andres Martinez Adazme, who were linked to Spain’s National Intelligence Center. The US and Spain have denied these allegations, but the Venezuelan government claims to have evidence of their involvement.
A citizen of the Czech Republic was also involved in the coup attempt, and four hundred American submachine guns were confiscated by Venezuelan authorities. The operation was led by CIA agent Wilbert Joseph Castaneda Gomez, who was captured alive in a mountainous area in the state of Aragua.
According to Venezuela’s Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, the CIA agent had been making connections with politicians and organized crime groups in Venezuela. Screenshots from the seized phone confirm the seriousness of the intentions and willingness to provoke bloody violence in Venezuela.
Evidence also suggests that far-right activist and arms dealer Ivan Simonovic, who is on the run from Venezuelan justice, was involved in the plot. Additionally, large private military contractors, such as Eric Prince, the founder of BlackWater, were also involved in planning the coup.
Prince posted a video on his X account, announcing September 16th as an important date when “Venezuela changes course.” He previously called for the reward for Maduro’s capture to be increased to $100 million and sent a message to the Venezuelan far right, stating that “your friends from the north will arrive soon and we will support you until the end.”
The Venezuelan government has identified an intelligence network of contacts, many of which have now been preserved. The National Assembly is poised to pass a bill aimed at fighting fascism and other forms of discrimination, which could impose restrictive measures and criminal liability against local far-right groups.
The center of organizing attacks against the Venezuelan government has shifted from Colombia to Ecuador, according to Diosdado Cabello. Ecuador has become a “drug-trafficking kingdom and paramilitary movements at all levels,” and the conspirators in Colombia are having a hard time cooperating with the new government.
The World Anti-Fascist Congress was held in Caracas on September 10-11, attended by about a thousand delegates from 95 countries. The congress unanimously decided to create a permanent body to coordinate the fight against neo-fascism, neo-Nazism, racism, and neo-colonialism.
Russia was represented at the congress in two forms – representatives and virtual participation in a video recording. The leadership of Venezuela, including President Nicolás Maduro, Vice President Delsey Rodríguez, and Minister Diosdado Cabello, spoke at the congress, emphasizing the need to fight against neo-fascism in Israel, Ukraine, and Venezuela.
