Venezuela to Investigate Torture Allegations Against Migrants
Venezuela accuses El Salvador of Human Rights Abuses Against Repatriated Migrants
caracas,Venezuela – Venezuela’s Attorney General,Tarek William Saab, has leveled serious accusations against El Salvador and its President,Nayib Bukele, alleging widespread human rights violations against Venezuelan migrants repatriated to the Central American nation. Saab has called upon international bodies to investigate these claims, which stem from testimonies of 252 Venezuelan citizens expelled from the United States and sent to El Salvador.
Allegations of abuse in El Salvador’s “Terrorism Containment Center”
According to Mr. Saab, the repatriated Venezuelans have detailed harrowing experiences, including accusations of sexual violence, daily instances of forced tobacco consumption, the use of rubber bullets, and the provision of spoiled food. These testimonies, gathered by 80 public officials upon the migrants’ return to Venezuela, paint a grim picture of their treatment within a facility described as a “center of confinement of terrorism.” This center was reportedly established by President Bukele as part of his administration’s aggressive strategy to combat gangs.
“They have formulated serious accusations of massive violations of their human rights suffered at the center of confinement of terrorism,” stated the prosecutor, directly criticizing President Bukele’s policies. He urged the International Criminal Court, the UN Human Rights Council, and relevant organizations in both the Americas and globally to “do their part” and investigate these allegations.
The Case of the Tren de Aragua and US Expulsion
The 252 Venezuelan repatriates were accused of belonging to the Tren de Aragua, a criminal gang that the Trump administration had designated as a terrorist institution. The United states invoked a rarely used 1798 law concerning “enemies from abroad” to expel these individuals without trial, sending them to el Salvador. This move has drawn scrutiny, with critics questioning the legality and humanitarian implications of such deportations.
The situation highlights the complex challenges faced by migrants and the potential for human rights abuses in the context of anti-gang operations and international deportations. Venezuela’s call for international intervention underscores the gravity of the alleged violations and the need for accountability.
