Venezuela’s Political Turmoil: Opposition Leaders Edmundo González and María Corina Machado Push for Change by January 2025

December 1, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Venezuela is approaching a pivotal date in its political landscape. The opposition leaders, María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, believe that González will be inaugurated as president on January 10, 2025, when the current presidential term ends. An opposition source expresses strong conviction in this outcome, although the exact method of this transfer of power remains vague.

The certainty among opposition figures concerns the ruling party, which has intensified its accusations against Machado and González, claiming they are attempting a coup. In response, the government has passed a law that penalizes those who support international sanctions against Venezuela, including public office disqualification and imprisonment.

The U.S. government has backed this narrative, suggesting that the days of the current regime are numbered. Many in the opposition are excited about the possibility of Marco Rubio becoming the next U.S. Secretary of State under a Trump administration, anticipating a tougher stance on the Venezuelan government.

Edmundo González has changed significantly since leaving for exile in Spain in September. He is now more assertive, stating his intention to assume the presidency based on the votes he received in the July elections. Despite being exiled, González is prepared for potential arrest if he returns to Venezuela.

How he plans to return remains uncertain. High-ranking chavista officials have threatened him with arrest if he attempts to return. Diosdado Cabello, a prominent figure in the ruling party, showcased handcuffs on a television program, indicating the fate that awaits González.

González has been leveraging his time abroad to build international support. He seeks recognition as president once the new term begins. However, he has not yet secured a strong commitment from European leaders, despite the urgent call for respecting the will of the Venezuelan people during elections.

In a recent G-7 summit, Venezuela was highlighted as a regional crisis, leading to promises of support for a transition. The U.S. administration has indicated that it would assist González’s return if he formally requests it.

Meanwhile, the Maduro government has restricted civil liberties even further. New arrests of opposition leaders and others linked to alleged plots against the regime have occurred. The “Libertador Law” was enacted, which increases penalties and expands the list of perceived enemies, sending a chilling message to critics of the government.

Machado, currently in hiding, believes it is time for a transition. She asserts that Maduro must accept proposals for his exit to avoid greater consequences. The political climate is tense, with rising government repression against opposition figures, including those seeking asylum in foreign embassies.

Juan Pablo Guanipa, a key figure in the opposition, emphasizes the need for internal pressure on Maduro before January 10. He insists that Edmundo González won the election, and Maduro is aware of this fact. He acknowledges the possibility of Maduro taking the oath of office but insists it will not end the struggle for democracy in Venezuela.

Other opposition leaders remain optimistic, maintaining contact with Machado, even if her exact situation is unclear. They affirm her determination to face upcoming challenges.
