Venezuela’s Presidential Jet Grounded: US Seizes Controversial Aircraft in Shocking Move
US Seizes Venezuelan President Maduro’s Private Plane Amid Sanctions and Election Controversy
The US Department of Justice has seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s private plane, a Daso Falcon 900EX, valued at approximately $13 million.
According to US Attorney General Merrick Garland, the aircraft was an “illegal purchase” that violated export controls. The plane was allegedly purchased through a shell company and smuggled into the United States.
The seized aircraft, reportedly Venezuela’s Air Force One, was in the Dominican Republic for maintenance before being moved to Florida.
US Economic Sanctions on Venezuela
The United States has imposed economic sanctions on Venezuela, citing President Maduro’s disputed election in 2018. The US has been blocking billions of dollars in funds and luxury goods from flowing into the Venezuelan regime.
The US Department of Justice warned that it will continue to monitor sanctions and export controls, and the seizure of the private jet is seen as an unusual move.
International Community Demands Election Transparency
President Maduro declared victory in the July presidential election amid controversy over fraud, sparking demands from the international community for transparency in the election results.
The US and other countries have recognized opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the winner, citing overwhelming evidence of his victory.
Indictment and Sanctions Speculation
President Maduro was indicted by US prosecutors in 2020 on charges of “narcoterrorism” along with several senior members of his regime. Some speculate that the US may impose additional sanctions on Venezuela.
Arrest Warrant for Opposition Candidate
Venezuelan authorities have moved to arrest candidate Gonzalez, who has claimed victory in the presidential election, on charges of usurpation of power.
A court issued an arrest warrant for Gonzalez, citing his failure to appear in court.
