Venom: The Last Dance Box Office Success Amidst Competition and Flops
Venom: The Last Dance Box Office Performance
Venom: The Last Dance has not matched the success of its predecessors, Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. However, after two disappointing films, Morbius and Madame Web, Sony Pictures may be satisfied with the third installment. Kraven the Hunter is projected to struggle as well.
Despite facing competition from Wicked and Gladiator II, Venom: The Last Dance has earned $456.4 million worldwide, making it the tenth highest-grossing movie of 2024. It surpasses Beetlejuice Beetlejuice but still trails behind movies like Kung Fu Panda 4, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Dune: Part Two, Despicable Me 4, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Inside Out 2. This performance indicates that theaters are still recovering from pandemic effects.
Red One, a Christmas film starring Dwayne Johnson, had a poor debut with $32.1 million after costing over $200 million to produce. After two weeks, it has made $52.9 million, reflecting a sharp 59% drop in ticket sales. This performance raises questions about Dwayne Johnson’s draw as a lead.
On a positive note, Johnson is expected to find success with the upcoming release of Moana 2 during Thanksgiving.
Wicked reportedly opened with $114 million in North America, outperforming Gladiator II, which earned $55.5 million. Wicked also exceeded expectations internationally, likely becoming a major hit of the year.
Dwayne Johnson commented on Red One, emphasizing the intent for audiences to enjoy it on large screens, particularly IMAX. He shared an experience of watching Oppenheimer in IMAX, imagining how impactful Red One could be in that format.
