From Lithuanian Stages to European Wanderings
David Kumpikevičius’s connection to a captivated audience began in his childhood,as a vocalist with the beloved Lithuanian group “Ventukai.” The band’s popularity was immense, performing an astonishing 300 days a year. “We grew up, ate, and prepared in the van,” David recalled in an interview on LNK, describing a life constantly on the move. He remembers a time, as a ten-year-old, when simply stepping onto a stage without a microphone felt unthinkable – a testament to the band’s pervasive presence in Lithuanian culture.
However, the vibrant world David knew crumbled when the band dissolved, leaving him facing an uncertain future. Driven by necessity, he embarked on a journey of emigration, initially to Europe.
the Weight of Longing and the search for Stability
The initial years were marked by a constant ache for home. ”The hardest thing was longing,” David confessed. “Sometimes I sat in the garden and watched the planes flying,thinking,’One day I’ll be on that plane home-and that’s it.'” He worked a series of jobs to survive – making sandwiches in London,hotel work,tending bar at events,and warehouse positions in Belgium and the Netherlands - each one a temporary stop on a path he hoped would eventually lead back to Lithuania.
A Mother’s Sacrifice across the Atlantic
David’s story is inextricably linked to his mother, Angela’s, even more arduous journey. In 2000, facing economic hardship, Angela made the agonizing decision to leave Lithuania for the United States, leaving her two young children behind. “What do we choose – mom or bread? We chose bread,” she recalled, her voice filled with emotion. In America,she worked tirelessly,taking on jobs ranging from security guard to nanny to provide for her family.
Angela described the emotional toll of being separated from her children. “When I took care of strangers in the morning, I felt like a mom, but when I came home in the evenings and looked in the mirror, I asked myself, ’What are you doing here? go home to your family.'”
Years Apart, A Constant Connection
For years, the family existed on different continents, connected only by phone calls. While david navigated life in Europe, Angela found love in America, but the longing for her children remained a constant presence. Her eventual return to Lithuania was deeply emotional.”When I returned to Lithuania for the first time, I wanted to kiss an old tile in Akmenė, on which I always stumbled. Even the tile became holy,” she shared.
Returning Home: A Full Circle Moment
After eight years of living abroad, David finally returned to Naujoji Akmenė, Lithuania. “I wake up in the morning, go out to the balcony, snooze, quiet, calm… After all the hustle and bustle of the big cities, I told myself - everything, I will never go anywhere,” he said, expressing a profound sense of peace.
Today, david is onc again pursuing his passion for music, performing and writing songs. He has also found love and started a family. ”I do my beloved job, the love I no longer expected, the child - the whole package. Now I want to live a lovely life in Lithuania,” he stated.
