Legal Battle Halts Rising Boxer Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s Career

Las Vegas, NV – February 15, 2026 – A Nevada judge has issued a temporary restraining order that is effectively sidelining boxing prospect Vergil Ortiz Jr., throwing a planned fight with Jaron “Boots” Ennis into jeopardy. The legal action, brought by Golden Boy Promotions, centers on a dispute over Ortiz’s promotional contract and his attempt to become a free agent.

The order, granted by a Nevada federal judge on February 14, 2026, prevents Ortiz from signing agreements with other promoters while the contractual dispute with Golden Boy remains unresolved. This intervention came at a critical juncture, as Ortiz’s team was finalizing details for a potential April 18th bout against Ennis, a matchup that would have been featured on a Matchroom card.

The core of the disagreement stems from the expiration of Golden Boy’s broadcast agreement with DAZN on December 31, 2025. Ortiz’s legal team argued that the end of the DAZN deal automatically terminated his promotional contract with Golden Boy. However, Golden Boy disputes this interpretation, maintaining that its promotional agreement with Ortiz remains in effect independently of any network broadcasting arrangement.

According to court filings and reports, the judge’s decision indicates acceptance of Golden Boy’s position, at least to the extent that intervention was warranted while the legal proceedings unfold. The timing of the restraining order suggests Golden Boy acted swiftly to prevent Ortiz from committing to a fight with Ennis and a rival promoter.

Ortiz initiated a legal challenge against Golden Boy on January 16, 2026, seeking a declaratory judgment confirming the termination of his contract. He alleges breaches of the agreement by Golden Boy Promotions, according to a 32-page lawsuit. Ortiz signed a three-year contract with Golden Boy in May 2024.

Golden Boy, in a statement, expressed confidence in its legal position, asserting that Ortiz and his representatives have repeatedly violated the terms of their contract. The company intends to “aggressively defend this lawsuit and enforce our rights,” believing a judge will ultimately uphold the validity of the agreement.

The situation echoes a previous legal battle involving Golden Boy and boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez in 2020, where Alvarez also sought to terminate his promotional contract with the company. Ortiz is represented by Gregory M. Smith, the same attorney who represented Alvarez in that prior case.

The restraining order not only impacts Ortiz’s immediate career prospects but also casts a shadow over the potential Ennis fight, a bout that boxing observers believed held significant competitive value and could have clarified the landscape of the super welterweight division. Negotiations between Ennis and Ortiz had been progressing, excluding Golden Boy, before the judge’s intervention.

Golden Boy reportedly learned of the ongoing negotiations between Ortiz and Ennis from three separate individuals affiliated with the boxing world. The company then moved to seek the temporary restraining order to halt any further agreements.

While Golden Boy is currently engaged in negotiations for a new media rights agreement with DAZN, with a potential show planned for March 14th, the court has effectively paused Ortiz’s career until the contractual dispute is resolved. The outcome of this legal battle will determine whether Ortiz can pursue opportunities with other promoters or remain under the Golden Boy banner.
