verizon, Trustly Expand Pay-by-Bank to Retail Stores

Updated June 04, 2025

verizon is partnering with Trustly to introduce pay-by-bank options in its retail stores. This allows customers to directly use their bank accounts when purchasing devices, upgrades, and accessories.

The initiative builds on Verizon’s existing efforts to promote pay-by-bank for bill payments, where customers receive monthly discounts for using the method.Attie Muse of Verizon noted that offering pay-by-bank in stores is a natural progression, streamlining the payment process for customers already visiting to buy devices and‌ accessories.

Previously, enrolling in autopay with a bank account was cumbersome. Now, customers can link their bank⁤ account and enroll in autopay in ‍a ‍single transaction, Muse told⁤ PYMNTS.The goal ⁤is to reduce payment acceptance costs and make direct bank payments more ⁣appealing by removing friction associated with‌ traditional Automated ⁣Clearing House (ACH) transactions.

With Trustly, Verizon aims to replicate the ease of eCommerce pay-by-bank in its physical stores. Customers can manage their phone setup and billing with‌ a sales representative and then complete transactions on their own devices using a Trustly widget.

This one-step enrollment eliminates the need for customers‍ to enroll in autopay later through‍ the Verizon app or website, which often happened when paying with a‍ card in-store and missing the autopay discount.

Kerrie Larpenter of Trustly said the collaboration marks a meaningful step in bringing ⁣pay-by-bank from‍ eCommerce to physical retail. Verizon is among the first to actively incentivize pay-by-bank, making it more beneficial for customers, she added.

Verizon is one of the first merchants to actively ⁣incentivize pay by bank making the simplified open ‍banking payment even more beneficial to customers,” she said.

Larpenter noted the blend of customer‍ communication⁣ and‍ incentives‌ is driving a‌ significant shift in consumer behavior, with positive impacts for merchants.

What’s next

Verizon plans to extend pay-by-bank options to eCommerce, ‌ensuring a seamless experience whether customers are shopping online or ⁢in a retail store.
