Los Angeles, CA – Italian director Maura Delpero’s powerful drama “Vermiglio” has taken a major step towards Oscar glory, landing a coveted spot on the Academy Awards shortlist for Best International feature film.
The announcement, made on December 17th, places ”Vermiglio” among 15 films vying for the prestigious award. The shortlist represents a diverse range of cinematic voices, including Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez” (France), Walter Salles’ “Io sono qui” (Brazil), and Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the sacred Fig” (Germany).
“It’s a joy!” exclaimed Delpero, who won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival for “Vermiglio.” “there are so many beautiful and deserving films in this competition. We feel incredibly fortunate too continue this journey and bring attention to ’Vermiglio’ and Italian cinema.”
Paolo Del Brocco, CEO of Rai Cinema, which co-produced “Vermiglio,” echoed Delpero’s excitement. “Maura Delpero is climbing the ladder to international recognition,one step at a time,” he said. “This is the second consecutive year that a Rai Cinema co-production has made the Oscar shortlist, following Matteo Garrone’s ‘Io Capitano’ last year. Delpero’s film, which explores themes of isolation and resilience in a remote mountain community, has already garnered critical acclaim, including a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best International Film.
The Academy will announce the final nominees on January 17th, with the 97th Academy Awards ceremony scheduled for March 2nd at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
