A Vermont man suspected of attempted murder in Mariposa County died by suicide during a traffic stop in the Modesto area on May 11, 2026.
Keith Capron was wanted by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office in connection with a shooting that occurred in the Coulterville area on the night of May 10, 2026. Authorities suspected Capron of using a handgun to shoot an individual twice in the head.
Following the shooting, Capron fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. In response to the incident, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office issued a “Be on the Lookout” (BOLO) alert to all relevant agencies to assist in locating the suspect.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed via a Facebook post that Capron had been located. According to an update provided by the agency, Capron died by suicide during a traffic stop in Modesto.
Investigators noted that Capron was originally from Vermont and had only been present in the Coulterville area for a short period of time.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office has not provided an update regarding the current condition of the shooting victim.
