Vermont Senate lawmakers are reconsidering a legislative proposal that would end the state’s program for testing schools for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), according to reporting from VTDigger.
House Bill H.542, which was sponsored by Representative Peter Conlon, a Democrat from Cornwall, was introduced with the intent to terminate the testing of Vermont schools for the presence of PCBs.
The Senate Committee on Education has been involved in the review of the legislation. A committee report regarding the bill was issued on April 23, 2026, which recorded a 6-0-0 vote during the committee’s proceedings.
Although the primary objective of H.542 was to conclude the environmental testing of school facilities, the current deliberations in the Senate indicate that lawmakers are revisiting the proposal to end the program.
