Max Verstappen discussed a close encounter with George Russell during qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix. Verstappen aimed to avoid disrupting other drivers. He said he kept a safe distance from those ahead while maintaining his speed.

During the session, Verstappen recorded the fastest lap in Q3. However, he later received a one-place grid penalty, placing him alongside Russell on the front row for the race.

Russell expressed concern about potential damage to his car from the incident with Verstappen. He felt Verstappen’s decision to stay behind created a risky situation. Verstappen clarified that he was adhering to a gentleman’s agreement among drivers.

“I didn’t want to screw anybody,” Verstappen stated. He acknowledged Russell’s fast approach but emphasized that he chose to follow the drivers in front without causing issues.
