Max Verstappen has firmly stated that Christian horner’s unexpected exit as Red Bull Racing’s team principal will not sway his future plans with the Formula 1 powerhouse. Despite persistent speculation linking the reigning world champion to a move to Mercedes, Verstappen indicated on Thursday that he fully intends to see out his current contract with Red Bull, which extends until 2028.
Verstappen’s Focus Remains on Performance
Speaking to reporters at the Belgian Grand Prix,a circuit holding personal meaning for the Dutch driver due to his Belgian heritage,Verstappen,27,emphasized that his primary concern lies with enhancing the performance and speed of his car. He dismissed the notion that past tensions between Horner and his father, Jos Verstappen, would influence his career decisions.
“No, it doesn’t. Not really,” Verstappen responded when questioned if Horner’s departure after two decades at the helm made his own stay at Red Bull more probable. He clarified that the widely reported discord between his father and Horner was never a notable impediment.
“People can have a difference of opinion, and I expect that to happen as if everyone agrees, there is a problem,” Verstappen explained. “You need to have differences in opinion. Now, we will work in a different direction, and I am excited about it, and I don’t think it will matter at all for the decision over my future.”
His singular focus, he reiterated, is on the car’s development. “The only thing that matters is that we work on the car and make it as fast as we can and try and be more competitive this year, a little bit, but for sure with the new regulations next year.”
Welcoming New Leadership and Technical Direction
Verstappen also expressed his approval of Laurent Mekies’s appointment as Horner’s successor. Mekies, promoted from his role within the red Bull junior team, Racing Bulls, is expected to usher in a renewed emphasis on technical and engineering prowess within the team. Verstappen clearly anticipates this shift could benefit Red Bull’s competitive edge.
When pressed on weather he had a decision to make regarding his future, Verstappen offered a characteristically philosophical response. “There is also the possibility of not waking up tomorrow, and so there is no driving,” he mused. “Life is unpredictable and, in general, I am happy with where I am at.”
He reaffirmed his long-term commitment, stating, “The target was that when I signed my deal, I would drive here until the end of my career.”
Aiming for a Strong Belgian Grand Prix Performance
Verstappen will be eager to quell the ongoing speculation with a dominant performance at the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend. A strong showing would provide a significant morale boost for both the team and new boss mekies. Currently, Verstappen finds himself in an unusual third position in the drivers’ standings, trailing McLaren’s Oscar piastri and Lando Norris. His performance on his favoured circuit could be the perfect antidote to the off-track narratives.
