Verstappen Loses Respect for Russell After Penalty Controversy
Verstappen Lashes Out After Controversial Penalty in Qatar
Max Verstappen secured a dominant victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, but the win was overshadowed by a heated controversy involving a penalty and a bitter feud with George Russell.
Verstappen was handed a grid penalty for allegedly impeding Russell during a cool-down lap in qualifying. The penalty, wich dropped him to second on the starting grid, sparked outrage from the Red Bull driver.
“I was quite surprised by everything that happened in the stewards’ room,” Verstappen said after the race.”Honestly, it’s very disappointing because everyone here respects each other. I’ve been in that room manny times with people I’ve raced against, but I’ve never seen anyone try to screw someone over like that.”
The penalty was controversial because Verstappen was penalized for impeding a driver who wasn’t on a flying lap, a situation rarely penalized in Formula 1. The stewards cited Verstappen for driving “unnecessarily slowly,” a common practice during cool-down laps that had never resulted in a penalty before.
The decision drew criticism from other drivers, with Fernando Alonso jokingly suggesting he would deliberately slow down behind other drivers during cool-down laps in Abu Dhabi to see if they would be penalized.
Verstappen, despite his frustration, managed to overtake Russell at the start and reclaim the lead, ultimately cruising to victory. However, the incident clearly left a sour taste in his mouth.
“I couldn’t believe the penalty,” Verstappen admitted. “But in a way,it’s not something that surprises me in this world we live in. I wasn’t happy, but you have to move on. It wasn’t fun, it’s the first time someone has been penalized for something that happens on a cool-down lap. I was trying to do it right, maybe I shouldn’t have done it. at the end of the session, everything is pretty much decided, and I didn’t want to ruin anyone’s lap or planning. I’m being penalized for doing it right. That’s what I tried to explain to the stewards, but it was like talking to a wall. I gave valid reasons, and it was clear that around me there were different situations, with people on cold tires, so I had to push and I didn’t want anyone to start their lap in the last corner.”
The incident has undoubtedly damaged the relationship between Verstappen and Russell, with the Dutchman expressing a loss of respect for his rival. The fallout from this controversy is likely to continue to reverberate throughout the Formula 1 paddock.
