Updated June 14, 2025
Montreal – Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 season faces potential disruption as he teeters on the edge of a race ban due to accumulated penalty points. The tension escalated at the Canadian Grand Prix after George Russell snatched pole position, adding fuel to the fire.
Verstappen’s frustration with the ongoing discussion about his penalty point situation boiled over. He described the focus as “childish” adn expressed his annoyance. This comes on the heels of an incident at the Spanish Grand Prix two weeks prior, where Verstappen made aggressive contact with Russell’s Mercedes.
Russell, seemingly enjoying the pressure on Verstappen, couldn’t resist a playful jab after qualifying. When asked about racing verstappen aggressively, Russell grinned and said, “I’ve got a few more points on my license to play with. Let’s see.”
Verstappen, visibly irritated during the subsequent press conference, reacted negatively when the topic of penalty points arose. “I don’t need to hear it again. It’s really pissing me off,” Verstappen stated, while Russell laughed at his reaction.

The FIA has indicated that Verstappen’s outburst would not trigger any disciplinary action regarding profanity rules.
When questioned about whether the penalty point situation added pressure, Verstappen sarcastically responded with a thumbs-up, saying, “Yep, I feel good.”
The current system means Verstappen’s role is precarious. With Formula 1’s penalty point system operating on a 12-month rolling basis, two of Verstappen’s points are set to expire on June 30. However, any further infraction this weekend or at the Austrian Grand prix coudl lead to a race ban.
What’s next
Verstappen must navigate the upcoming races cautiously to avoid further penalties and a potential suspension, while Russell looks to capitalize on any opportunity.
