Verstappen Reflects on Challenging Weekend,Cites Tire Management and Setup as Key Issues

Max Verstappen has opened up about a tough weekend, admitting that despite a podium finish, his performance was hampered by a combination of setup choices and ongoing tyre management issues. The Dutchman, who secured third place, expressed frustration with the carS inability to challenge for the win, particularly in the latter stages of the race.
Inters Prove Tricky, Slick Tyres Reveal Underlying Pace deficit
Verstappen explained that while the car felt faster on intermediate tyres due to the chosen setup, overtaking proved to be an insurmountable challenge. “On the inters, we where naturally a bit faster as of the set up that we had on the car,” he stated. “It was just very tough to pass. At one time, I was really close going into Eau Rouge, but you lose so much downforce when you are behind. The car becomes really unstable,so you couldn’t really keep it on the road.”
The switch to slick tyres, however, highlighted a more meaningful concern for the reigning champion. “We went onto the slick tyres and to be honest, every lap, I just felt that Charles was pulling away a little bit,” Verstappen admitted. “Then he had one mistake where I think he lost about one-and-a-half seconds. That’s why it looked like I was back in the fight, but realistically, I never really felt I was in that fight.”
Rear Wing Choice and tyre Woes Hamper Race Potential
The decision to opt for a specific rear wing configuration, aimed at compensating for potential wet conditions, ultimately proved to be a miscalculation. “Of course, I always try to get into the fight, but today, partly as of the rear wing that we chose because we hardly did any wet laps in the end which generally, I think is a shame,” Verstappen lamented. “I think we could have gone racing.”
the most persistent issue, however, remains the team’s struggle with tyre degradation. “That’s not ideal but the biggest problem is still how we keep our tyres alive in the race. We’re just not strong enough on that,” he concluded.
Sprint Podium a Fleeting High Amidst Deeper Concerns
The Sprint race marked Verstappen’s first podium finish as the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in May, a statistic that underscores the team’s recent challenges. Reflecting on the weekend as a whole, Verstappen was candid about the team’s current standing. “It’s of course not where I want to be, but we are trying,” he said. “Yesterday was a positive result for us, but it is not a realistic result, because we are way slower. But today,I tried.”
he reiterated that the setup and decision-making, particularly regarding the rear wing, did not contribute to a stronger performance. “All in all, with the decision making and the set up that we chose with the wing didn’t help. but nevertheless, P3 was probably the maximum possible with the ideal scenario and, regrettably, this didn’t happen today.” The team now faces the critical task of addressing these fundamental issues to regain their competitive edge.
