Veteran Leaders Appointed for Singapore’s Eastern General Hospital Opening 2029-2030
Eastern General Hospital (EGH) will open in Bedok North between 2029 and 2030. Two key leaders will guide its establishment.
Starting January 1, 2025, Associate Professor Gan Wee Hoe will become the pro-tem chief executive, and Associate Professor Augustine Tee will take the role of pro-tem medical board chairman, as announced by SingHealth on November 27.
Prof Gan is currently the chief executive of SingHealth Community Hospitals. He is an occupational physician and previously served as the chief medical informatics officer at Singapore General Hospital. He has experience in upgrading electronic medical records within the Singapore Armed Forces. In his new role, he will lead the hospital’s strategies and operations.

Prof. Gan Wee Hoe: Thank you for having us. My primary objective is to ensure that EGH becomes a leading healthcare institution that focuses on patient-centered care. I will be leading the strategies and operations to optimize the hospital’s functionality from day one. My experience with electronic medical records will also be fundamental in ensuring a seamless integration of technology in patient care.

Prof. Gan: Certainly. My previous roles have equipped me with a robust understanding of both clinical and operational aspects of healthcare. Prof. Augustine Tee: My role revolves around the development and oversight of EGH’s clinical services and specialties. I’ll be responsible for ensuring that we not only meet but exceed the expected healthcare standards. This involves laying down the foundation for clinical governance, quality assurance, and workforce training. My experience leading the medicine division at Changi General Hospital will be pivotal in establishing strong medical protocols and practices at EGH.
Interviewer: That’s an important task ahead. How do you envision the collaboration between your departments?
Prof. Tee: Collaboration is paramount in healthcare. We will establish a structured framework for communication among the various specialties. Weekly meetings involving department heads will ensure alignment on patient care initiatives. We will also utilize data analytics to streamline processes and improve patient outcomes.
Interviewer: EGH will have 1,400 beds. How do you plan to manage such a large capacity effectively?
Prof. Gan: Managing a hospital of that size requires meticulous planning and resource allocation. We are focusing on creating efficient patient flow pathways to reduce bottlenecks and enhance patient satisfaction. Additionally, we will integrate technology to monitor bed availability in real-time, enabling us to respond promptly to fluctuating demands.
Interviewer: With the opening scheduled for 2029-2030, what are the immediate next steps you will focus on during the planning phase?
Prof. Tee: Our immediate focus will be on finalizing the clinical care models and recruiting the necessary talent across medical specialties. It’s crucial to build a team that not only possesses clinical expertise but also aligns with our vision of compassionate care. We will also engage with community stakeholders to understand their healthcare needs better.

Prof Tee has been the chairman of the medicine division at Changi General Hospital for six years, overseeing 12 medical specialty departments. He is currently the Hospital Clinical Services Lead for the EGH planning committee and has developed the hospital’s clinical care and service models. As chairman of the medical board, he will manage the development of professional services and clinical specialties at EGH.
EGH, managed by SingHealth, will feature 1,400 beds. It will provide inpatient and outpatient care as well as emergency services.
