Strategic Importance of Overseas Missions
The VFW’s annual overseas missions serve vital organizational national security and foreign affairs objectives. These trips allow senior leadership to:
- Strengthen ties with host nation governments.
- Observe field operations.
- Understand the needs of the DPAA.
- Assess the welfare of U.S. troops and veterans stationed and residing outside the United States.
Leveraging its advocacy platform in Washington, D.C.,the VFW uses insights from these visits to inform management officials and members of Congress. this ensures the DPAA receives full funding and that troops and veterans, including Department of Defense (DOD) civilians, are well-supported, can fulfill their missions, and have access to their entitled benefits and services.
legislative Impact and Advocacy
VFW advocacy, stemming from past overseas visits, has yielded meaningful results.Such as, legislation to overhaul the Department of veterans affairs’ Foreign Medical Program was introduced by Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) during the 118th and current Congresses. Additionally, in 2024, the DOD decided to continue providing mail privileges to military retirees living abroad, directly benefiting veterans overseas.
