Victor Vlam, teh latest sensation in the Dutch TV critic scene, recently found himself in an awkward spotlight on Shownieuws. His overt pursuit of a TV career during a segment on De Oranjezomer was so transparent and self-assured that it became almost painful to watch, with his confidence seemingly overshadowing any genuine insight.
“This is Not Possible!” The Uncomfortable Truth
The fallout from Vlam’s audacious TV job submission was palpable. Confronted on De Oranjezomer, he explained his strategy: “I thought: nobody is going to give me that position, nobody, dús: I’m going down. But if you still go down, then you have to go down fighting.”
Host Thomas van Groningen, however, questioned the approach. “Yes, but openly applying for a job on TV… I don’t know if you should ever do that, but if you do it, don’t do it that way.”
After a compilation of Vlam’s performance was shown, Van groningen exclaimed, “This is not possible. Frits, say something about it!”
‘I Thought: Practise’
Frits, clearly taken aback, admitted,”No,this is not possible, but I think that is what you think. It is therefore hilarious.”
Vlam attempted to salvage the situation with self-deprecating humor. “Do you know what the worst is and whatever you see there? they didn’t even have to give me a scoop. I was just digging myself and making the gap deeper and deeper.”
Van groningen then turned to TV authority Tina Nijkamp, asking, “Tina, his chances are now lost, right?”
Nijkamp’s response was blunt: “I thought: practice, when I saw it. Phew,I thought so. I thought: oops, Victor, you’re a bit finished now, like playing tag.”
The Missing Ingredient: Self-Relativity
Tina elaborated on what she felt was lacking in Vlam’s performance. “Victor seemed to believe in himself very much at that time,” she observed. “What I mainly missed was the perspective, and I think that at VI [Veronica Inside] it is very crucial that there is a person in the chair of René van der Gijp with perspective, and I couldn’t discover that last night.”
She likened his approach to an overly complex explanation: “It was as if you made some kind of science or was busy making a kind of medicine against a very intense disease or something that you were going to explain that.”
The Drive to Be Known
Thomas van Groningen probed further into Vlam’s motivations, wondering if his eagerness stemmed from a desire for fame. “You just want to be known. Is that one thing?”
vlam candidly admitted, “I know that I benefit from becoming a little more famous, because then you can just do things like this more ofen.I just have a certain urge to apply and a urge to prove, and I have something like: there are few peopel in the media who dare to say what they really find, and I do.”
While Vlam’s directness is certainly a characteristic, his recent TV job hunt on Shownieuws served as a stark reminder that even the most confident individuals can misjudge the room, turning a potential career move into a public spectacle.
